Whats the difference between your programmes and information that's available online?

I am a mum of 3 girls; 9, 7 and 4. When my now 7 year old; Deveena was 4 months old I sleep trained her. I had to ask my friend who is a Qualified Sleep Consultant to Sleep Train her. Why when I could have done it myself?! SLEEP DEPRIVATION!!! I was completely wiped out and too exhausted to even think about implementing a sleep plan myself and doing a DIY programme! I was suffering physical exhaustion and mental fatigue and I am a Sleep Consultant! That goes to show the extent of the impact of Sleep Deprivation.

When parents approach me and discuss what they have read online and tell me these stories of things that didn’t work, the first thing I tell them is STOP READING!

These are the reasons why:

– There is too much information on the internet which can cause overwhelm

– Sleep Training books are not personalised to your child

– The Internet uses scare tactics which are not scientifically proven and are all based on personal opinions around what Sleep Training is and that it involves leaving yoru baby cry it out. Leaving your baby to ‘Cry it Out’ is a big fat lie and its detremental to babies and parents that this false information is being spread!

– Night weaning advice is generic and not tailored to your child

– There is no support during/after your Sleep Training Process

– You are left navigating the entire process by yourself

– When in doubt, for night wakings you are likely to react to your baby rather than respond; which means its likely to be less susccessful without professional guidance

– When you hire a Sleep Consultant you and your partner have peace of mind that you are implementing your Sleep Plan and Method correctly

Sleep Training is not just about implementing any random Sleep Method from a book. Its about brining together all elements; daytime routine, nap lenghts, finding your childs personal awake window between naps and bedtime, identifying their sleep resistance levels, addressing the root cause of their daytime behaviour, calculating milk against body weight and age, looking at a personal age appropriate bedtime timing that suits you and your family, how to manage multiple children alone when starting sleep training, looking at night feeds and how to wean according to your parent style and values, increasing daytime solids and nutritional advice around sleep outcomes and lastly looking at your childs temprement and your Nervous System around implementing the correct and most approproiate Sleep Training Method according to your Parenting Values.

My Sleep Training Programmes provide a hand holding experience and you are supported via Phone, Email and WhatsApp. This means you are fully supported throughout Sleep Training and this includes a Completion Call, personalised moving on plan, lifetime access to my Sleep Training Private Facebook Group and a 3 Year Sleep Bible to keep your child Sleep Trained.

What sleep methods do you use?

I use scientifically evidence based methods which mean that they are age appropriate and aligned with a childs age and temprement. I am a Qualified BACP Registered Therapist and this requires me to follow the BACP Code of Conduct and Ethics. What does this means for you as a Sleep Training Parent? That I am ethically bound by a UK Governing Body and my Sleep and Counselling Programmes need to abide by the BACP Coduct and Ethics Policy. When I work with you and your family my main focus is to make sure you, as the parents, are kept in your Parenting Value System. When we start working together I will send you a Sleep Assessment to complete; on thier you will complete questions that ask about your parenting values, approach, life styles, family set up, personal circumstances and childs temprement. This is the exact information I use to then put together your Bespoke Sleep Plan. I have worked with families for over 18 years and am extremely experienced in combining Sleep Methods, Habit Stacking and using Hybrid Approaches during Sleep Training. My studies have allowed me to look into the science behind human sleep and work with biological rhythms.

Newborn Sleep Shaping is a completely hands on approach where we do not use off hands or cry based methods for under 4 months old.

For babies who are older than 4 months old. I work with a range of methods from gentle hands on approaches right the way through to stay in the room and supportive methods to cry based methods. I have also created my own in room Sleep Training Method which is popular. I do not guarentte zero tear Sleep Training however I will never tell you to leave your baby to cry and to not attend to your baby. My Sleep Training Programmes will teach you exactly when and  how to attend to your baby without feeding and rocking to sleep.

I am often asked if you have to leave your baby to cry. The simple answer to this is NO. Leaving your baby to cry is a Sleep Method called Extinction. I do not advocate or encourage this Sleep Training Method and leaving your baby to cry is not Sleep Training.

The other element of my Sleep Training Programmes is focusing on daytime routine and finding your childs personal awake window between naps and bedtime. When we do this it helps avoid overtiredness. When a baby is overtired the tears are intense and the sleep resistance is higher which means more assisting to sleep. By working with personal awake windows we help to reduce tears massivley.

Many people approach me and tell me they have tried Ferber Controlled Crying and gave up after 2 days. I always advise families that Sleep Training is not just teaching a baby to sleep. It is looking at development, behaviour, feeding and nap routine, night feeds, bedtime, sleep environment, safe sleeping, nutrition to name just a few. These all contribute to healthy sleep habits, creating a foundation for your childs sleep.

When you Sleep Train with me, these are all the things that will be addressed in your Sleep Plan. Its not easy bringing all these elements together to create a successful Sleep Training Journery, whilst you have overwhelming sources of information on the internet and are Sleep Deprieved yourself.

I will guide you every step of the way and if you choose a Sleep Training 3 Week Support Programme; this is a hand holding programme so we will be communication everyday and you will also have a 24 hour Milk, Food and Sleep Log. We will be in daily contact with each other and if we need to change anything we can.

Will my baby cry?

This means when we Sleep Train together your chosen Sleep Method will be based on your Parenting Values, approach and your childs temprement.

I use a range of Sleep Training Methods; from hands on approaches right through the cry based methods. I habit stack, combine methods and use Hybrid Approaches. Your Sleep Training Programme includes a support package; where I review 24 hour sleep logs. If your baby cries we will look at another sleep method to make sure you are within your values and comfort levels.

I also work on finding personal awake windows that are indiviudal and age appropriate. This means reducing overtiredness and that equals less tears! So we work on various elements of Sleep Training to settle your child – not just a Sleep Method.

The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) has published a report; the lifelong effects of Early Childhood Adversity and Toxic Stress along with a policy statement. AAP reviews stress levels in children reporting the following;

  1. Positive stress response: a normal response that is helpful for the growth of your child. These responses are not intense, irregular and short. Whatever the stressful event the child remains supported throughout. Processing these emotions and resilience is learning skill when these events occur. When an event like this occurs biochemical reactions return to normal shortly after.
  2. Tolerable Stress: These are longer and more severe responses. Examples include loss of a loved one, divorce, illness. When the stressor is removed the brain returns to normal if the child is safe, protected and supported.
  3. Toxic Stress: This is a stressor that impacts the brain and body to such a level that recovery fails. Care giving is absence and the child is left damaged. Examples include sexual abuse, violence and household dysfunction

The above stress indicators give you a great example of how your child processes stress. Sleep Training falls into the Positive Stress Response; similar to starting Nursery or Daycare. Often parents dont see it in this way; when you leave your child at nursery your child genuinally does not know whether you are coming back. When you Sleep Train you are right next to your child, comforting them and by their side throughout.

When considering Sleep Training its important to look at Sleep Depreivation in a child and the impact of this. When a child struggles to sleep it can be damaging. Sleep is essential to growth and development physically, mentally and emotionally. So many things happen when you sleep; your immune system rests and repairs, your cells grow, your brain develops and your emotions are able to regulate.  It is also vital for parents to get sleep. Sleep deprivation affects mental health, social relationships, diet, well being, relationship with partners and how you manage your children. We know that when we lack sleep it affects our energy levels and moods.

Sleep Training Versus Sleep Depreivation? As a Qualified BACL Registered Therapist and Certified Sleep Consultant my professional opinion is that Sleep Deprievation is more detremental to a child.

Will you take on board mine and my partners Parenting Approach and Values?

This means when we start to Sleep Train we will have unlimited phone calls and a 3 way WhatsApp group with both parents to keep communication close and to review your progress every morning. This helps to ensure you are always kept within your parenting values.

I am also a Somatic Practitioner; I work closely with Anxiety, Stress, Depression and Overwhelm. I work with your Nervous System. You can find my latest blog here where I will discuss how I Sleep Training whilst staying within the boundaries of your parenting values.

Here is my latest blog on Sleep Training and The Nervous System: Your Nervous System and Sleep Training

Moving House? Going on Holiday?

I am often approached by parents who are desperate to Sleep Train but are either moving house or going on holiday. So they assume that they can’t sleep trained, that it won’t work or it will be too disruptive!

You can absolutley sleep train when moving home or going on holiday! When you sign up for Sleep Training together we will figure out the best start date for you. You do not start sleep training from day 1 of Sign Up!!

You can sign up and leave me to put your plan together, whilst you focus on your house move or holiday. When you return/have moved we hit the ground running with your Sleep Training! So for holidays I advise to sign up before you go because I can help you navigate your actual holiday and sleep! As well as start your training upon return.

For moving: if you do not have a moving date yet, you can sleep train in your old place. Part of your Sleep Programme will then be how to  transition your baby into their new place of sleep in your new home! If you do have a moving date, you can sign up before you move and whilst you focus on moving, I will start the preparations for your Sleep Plan, ready for you to start!

So the way my programmes work; is that when you first sign up to Sleep Train, we will need around 5 – 7 days to actually prepare for Sleep Training. This time is taken for you to complete your Sleep Assessment and send that to me. Then I will use it to create your Bespoke Sleep Plan. This will be sent to you, for you and your family to read and digest it. We will then go through any questions you have.

Note: From the date that you receive your Sleep Plan you have 2 weeks to actually start sleep training. I offer this 2 week period for you to read your plan, set the 3 Way WhatsApp Group up, get your questions answered, set the bedroom up, get yoru shopping list, prep the cot, inform the household, clear yoru diary and get yourselves prepared. So you do not need to start Sleep Training on the day you receive your plan!

Following this you can start your Sleep Training Programme!!

Can I Sleep Train my baby if I am Breastfeeding?

Absolutley yes!! I am asked this question alot and I am honestly not sure where this information origniates from. I sleep train both breastfed and formula fed babies. The Sleep Training Approach is exactly the same. I will work with you to establish a daytime feeding rhytm, if you choose to implemengt one.

My Sleep Programmes are entwined with Nutrion; food and milk as well as sleep. When we work together I will be reviewing a 24 hour food, milk and sleep log so I can guide you each of these areas.

I will look at the number of feeds, timing of feeds, quantity and lenght, if there are any feeding issues, babies weight, centile and growth chart and also put together a Age Appropriate Night Feeding Guide.

Can I continue Room Sharing with my baby?

Yes! I work with many families who are not yet ready to transition their child into their own room and Sleep Trainig is equally as effective. It is not my role to advise you to room share or not.

If you would like to Sleep Train and continue room sharing, I will advise you in your Sleep Plan of exact instructions for training and support you with the logistics and set up of each family members bedroom.

I am Safer Sleep Trained with the Lullaby Trust and follow The American Academy of Peaditricians for Safe Sleep Guidelines

I don't want a strict schedule or be stuck indoors; can I still Sleep Train?

Absolutely!

When you Sleep Train with me, the only requirement is for you to have your Social Diary free of social activities and events for 1 – 2 weeks of Sleep Training. This does not include managing multiple children, school and nursery pick up/drop off and work committments. I ask for this so we can spend the time to focus on yoru childs personal awake window and implementing the sleep training method.

That said if you struggle with anxiety, mental health or exhaustion and would like to head out for local walks and fresh air – thats what we will work with! I am a huge advocate for Mental Health especially for families for have just welcomed a little one into the world. Its hard enough as it is without me telling you to stay indoors!

My Sleep Training Programmes include a 3 Year Sleep Bible and one of the handouts is Managing Days Out and Social Activities. This means during Sleep Training I will support you in navigating Sleep and days out for when you do complete together. You will have clarity, confidence and guidance around living the life you choose to live with your family, without missing out on Social Activties and without disrupting your childs sleep. Your child will stay Sleep Trained with my 3 year sleep bible.

We will look at how to bring about felxibility, navigate bedtime and what short naps on days out mean for you!

Check out my Podcast on: I don’t want a strict routine!

How will Sleep Training help my childs day to day behaviour

Your child needs a good 11 – 12 hours of solid sleep. If you feel sleep deprived, your child will feel it more.

It is sceintifcally proven that a good nights sleep is essential for a childs growth, physically, mentally and emotionally.

When you sleep train with me you will see an extraordinary change in your childs food, behaviour, temprement, development and general wellbeing.

Sleep impacts all areas so when you sleep train with me; all areas will change!!

My baby is teething can I still Sleep Train

Teething is often blamed for unexplained periods of sleep disturbances, causing your baby to be unsettled and looking like or sounding like they are in pain from
teething. A tooth can take 3 to 6 days to cut through properly. So any signs outside of this are usually down to something else; their developmental stage, gross or fine motor developmental learning curve, building social awareness, babbling, learning to sit up, or crawl, a period of separation anxiety or mastering their hand-eye coordination task!

When a baby has a Sleep Association and does not know how to Self Settle, link their sleep cycles and resettle, the teething pain can cause them to wake. The sleep issues mean they don’t know how to get themselves back to sleep following this wake up! So it may appear that your child is teething for long periods at a time, they may wake up upset, crying, difficult to resettle however if they have a sleep issues this will be the overall contributing factor – not the actual teething.

80% of Sleep Trained babies fly through teething and illness!

When we Sleep Train together if you baby shows signs of teething, we can pause sleep training for a few days, until the tooth has cut. The number of days on hold is not taken away from your support package; so you have the same number of days left when we restart.

Day 3 – 6 Symptoms commonly attributed to teething:

Gas and wind
Fever
Coughs, runny nose and colds
Diarrhoea
Nappy/diaper rash
Pain
Sleep problems

Day 4 – 5 Symptoms of teething Drooling:

Chewing on lots of hard objects – including knuckles, wooden toys, feet, utensils and any other
hard object they can lay their hands on!
Reluctance to eat
Pulling at their ears
Bright red cheeks

How do you manage illness around Sleep Training

Quite simple really! We hit pause!

I do not sleep train a baby who shows signs of illness. I am happy to put your Sleep training on hoold for 7 days, without losing any days.

Please see my Terms and Conditions for further information

Isn't my babies sleep issues just a phase that they will grow out of?

Birth Doula FAQs

What is the difference between a Birth Doula and a midwife?
Midwives are trained medical professionals: during your pregnancy and birth they monitor you and your baby’s health, performing procedures such as blood pressure, temperature and dilation checks. A midwife has a number of mothers under her care, while a birthing doula is completely exclusive to you. I’m here to meet your emotional, practical and physical (but not medical!) needs, offering reassurance, information and support to you and your partner.

During your pregnancy we’ll work together and with your midwife to ensure you have the most enjoyable birth experience possible, and that you’re equipped to deal with any unforeseen changes or challenges. I can’t replace your midwife’s specialist medical knowledge, but I can be a second, supporting voice and an unwavering advocate for your decisions.

At what stages of labour will you be with me as my doula? Do you come to my home?
When you go into labour you can call me at any stage. You may feel that you are coping and want some privacy. (I will be at the end of the phone right up until I come and join you). When you do want me to come to the hospital/your home I will make my way there. I will stay with you until after baby has arrived and you have given the first feed and are all settled. If however progress is slower then what we hope, for example over 15/20 hours, I will go home for a few hours and rest then come back. Babies give us good indicators when they are arriving. If it has been a long labour and there are signs that baby may come soon then I do not go home.

I do come to your home or hospital. If I come to you at home we transfer together to hospital, unless you are having a home birth.

How do I go about hiring a doula? How do I know they’re right for me?
To get the most from your birthing doula, you need to find someone that you truly connect with, and feel you can open up to and trust at this special time in your life. Doulas by nature are warm, caring and knowledgeable. I offer a face to face free no obligation meeting where you can ask me as many questions as you like, your partner/family can come along too. It’s a light hearted chat where we can see if we would like to work together.
What if my partner isn’t sure about the benefits of a doula?
Partners-to-be have a massive role to play during pregnancy and birth, and while they may not be so vocal, they have their own questions, worries and concerns too. Having a birthing doula also means that your husband or partner has someone they can turn to if they’re finding things difficult – or it can simply mean that they have the peace of mind that you have someone else to turn to for information and support that they may be unable to offer you themselves.

If your partner isn’t sure about using a doula, invite them to join you when we meet up – the 3 of us can have chat about my services and see how we all get along.

Families I have worked with have always been so appreciative of my support. It takes a huge weight from them; they have a shoulder to lean on, informative information especially in the moment of need, time out for a quick rest or a chance to give a massage whilst I talk to a midwife. These are only some of the benefits of having a doula.

How long will it take for you to get to me when I call you?
I will require 1 to 1.5 hours’ travel time to get to you so when you call me please be aware of this.
